Merzig

Merzig sits on the Saar river near the border with Luxembourg and France, at the edge of the Saar-Hunsrück nature park. The Besseringen B-Werk, a completely preserved bunker from the WWII-era Siegfried Line ("Westwall") fortifications, is one of the best-preserved examples of that defensive network open to visitors. The town is also known regionally for the Merziger Bratwurstfest, a ten-day open-air folk festival held in late July or early August that is one of Saarland's largest.

Merzig has two rail stations on the Saarstrecke that runs between Saarbrücken and Trier .

By bus

links Merzig with Luxembourg City every hour, taking 1:20 hours.

By car

Merzig is just off the A8 about 45 km northwest of Saarbrücken.

The town centre is walkable; local buses connect the surrounding districts along the Saar.

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig long-distance trail passes near Merzig, and the Saar river loop offers walking routes through the old town and riverside.
