Overview

Samtskhe-Javakheti covers Georgia's southwestern highlands — the region bordering Turkey, with a significant Armenian-speaking minority and a landscape of volcanic lakes (Paravani, Tabatskuri), high plateaus, and the most extraordinary medieval monument in the Caucasus: the Vardzia cave monastery city.

The Vardzia complex — carved from a volcanic cliff in the 12th century by Queen Tamar — originally contained 3,000 apartments, 13 churches, and a tunnel system connecting 300 metres of clifftop. An earthquake in 1283 destroyed the cliff face, revealing the interior; the remaining carved rooms and churches are still partially inhabited by a small monastic community.

When to Visit

May–October for Vardzia and the plateau lakes. November–April is cold and snowy; road access to the plateau areas may be restricted.

Getting Around

Akhaltsikhe (the regional capital) is 5h from Tbilisi by marshrutky. Vardzia is 60 km south of Akhaltsikhe by car or taxi. The Rabati Castle and the border with Turkey are both accessible from Akhaltsikhe.

Top Destinations

  • Vardzia — 12th-century rock-cut monastery city; 6,000 carved rooms on 13 storeys in a volcanic cliff; Queen Tamar's personal church with original 12th-century frescoes (partially preserved); the most spectacular medieval site in Georgia
  • Rabati Castle (Akhaltsikhe) — A fortress complex incorporating Georgian, Ottoman, and Armenian-era buildings; the most visited tourist site in the region; somewhat over-restored
  • Lake Paravani — The largest high-altitude lake in Georgia (2,073m); wild landscape; migrating waterfowl; the most atmospheric of the Javakheti plateau lakes
  • Sapara Monastery — Hidden monastery in a forested gorge above Akhaltsikhe; 13th-century frescoes in remarkably good condition

Notable Experiences

Vardzia at dusk. Approaching Vardzia by car as the sun drops behind the volcanic rim and the cliff face goes from golden to shadow — with the carved window openings visible as dark squares across 300 metres of cliff — and then climbing the internal staircases as the monastery falls quiet, is one of the most genuinely transporting medieval experiences in the entire Caucasus.
