Overview

Mtskheta-Mtianeti covers the historically and geographically pivotal zone of Georgia — from Mtskheta (the ancient capital, 20 km from Tbilisi) through the Aragvi River gorge to the Kazbegi highland and the Russian border. The Kazbegi massif (with Mount Kazbek, 5,047m) and the Gergeti Trinity Church are the most photographed Georgian landscape.

Mtskheta itself is the spiritual capital of Georgia — the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Catholicosate and the site of the Jvari Monastery (UNESCO) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (UNESCO), two of the most important medieval buildings in the Caucasus.

When to Visit

April–June and September–October for ideal hiking and sightseeing conditions. July–August for the Kazbegi hiking season (snow-free passes). Winter for dramatic snow landscapes at Kazbegi; the road may close in heavy snowfall.

Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Mtskheta-Mtianeti route around them.

Getting Around

Mtskheta is 20 km from Tbilisi; regular marshrutky (30 min). Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is 2.5h from Tbilisi by marshrutky or car on the Georgian Military Highway. The Gergeti Trinity Church requires a 4x4 or 2h hike from the town.

Top Destinations

  • Jvari Monastery (UNESCO) — 6th-century church on the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, above Mtskheta; the oldest Christian monument in Georgia; the view from the monastery is the classic Georgian historical vista (and the setting for Lermontov's poem "Mtsyri")
  • Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Mtskheta, UNESCO) — 11th-century cathedral of the Patriarch of Georgia; the first Georgian church; the robe of Christ (according to tradition) is buried beneath the cathedral; the most important religious site in Georgia
  • Gergeti Trinity Church (Kazbegi) — 14th-century Trinity Church perched at 2,170m above the Terek River valley, with Mount Kazbek (5,047m) behind; the defining image of Georgia; reached by 4x4 or 2-hour hike from Stepantsminda
  • Ananuri Fortress — 17th-century fortress complex above a reservoir on the Military Highway; two churches, defensive towers, and walls above the Zhinvali Reservoir

Cuisine

Mountain Cuisine (Kazbegi area) — khinkali are larger and more pepper-heavy in the mountain tradition; roasted lamb on a spit; the taste of altitude (thinner air, simpler cooking, extraordinary spring water).

Culture & Festivals

Mariamoba (August 28): Pilgrimage to Alaverdi and various monasteries including Jvari; the most important Orthodox festival in Georgia.

Notable Experiences

Gergeti Trinity Church at dawn. Hiking to the Gergeti Trinity Church in the pre-dawn dark — arriving at the top as the first light touches Mount Kazbek, the glacier glowing pink above the dark valley, the church bell occasionally rung by the resident priest — is the definitive Georgian mountain experience. It requires early departure (04:00 for the 2-hour hike) but the light and the solitude (before the tourist jeeps arrive at 07:00) are completely transformative.
