Essau
North Bank, Gambia
Why visit Essau?
Essau is a town in the Lower Niumi District of North Bank Division, near Barra, with an estimated population of roughly 6,700 (2009). It carries real historical weight as a seat of the former Kingdom of Niumi: Mansa Maranta Sonko, the kingdom's last king, and Burungai Sonko, who led local resistance against colonial forces in an 1831 conflict, both originated from Essau, and several of the town's later political and legal figures also trace their roots here.
