About Orient Bay

Orient Bay (Baie Orientale in French) is a stunning crescent of white sand on the northeastern coast of Saint-Martin, widely considered the most famous beach on the island. Stretching nearly 2 km along the Atlantic shore, Orient Bay is the French side's premier beach destination — a broad swath of powdered sand backed by low dunes and coconut palms, lapped by turquoise waters that vary from calm to choppy depending on the Atlantic swell. The beach is divided into distinct sections: the northern end is quiet and family-friendly, the central stretch is lined with beach bars and water-sports rental kiosks, and the southernmost end is the famous Club Orient section, where clothing-optional sunbathing has been a tradition for decades. Beyond the beach, the area includes a small settlement of villas, a handful of restaurants set back from the sand, and the residential neighbourhoods of Baie Orientale and Mont Vernon. The climate is tropical and sun-drenched, with cooling trade winds moderating the heat. The best months are December to April; the beach can be windy from January to March, which is excellent for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

How to reach

By Plane

Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side is approximately 13 km away — a 25–30 minute drive by taxi (US$30–35). Grand Case-Espérance Airport (SFG) is about 6 km north-west, a 12–15 minute drive.

By Train

By Car / Road

Orient Bay is accessed via the N7 from Grand Case or Marigot. From Grand Case, take the D978 coast road south-east (about 10 minutes). From Marigot, follow the N7 east then turn onto the D978 (about 20 minutes). The roads are well paved and signposted. Parking is available in lots behind the beach and along the access road. Public minibuses run from Marigot and Grand Case to Orient Bay but are irregular.

The beach is the main focus and is easily walkable along its 2-km length. Beyond the beach, a rental car or scooter is the best way to reach restaurants, shops, and neighbouring areas. Taxis can be arranged from the beachfront hotels.

Things to do

  • Orient Bay Beach — The beach itself is the main attraction: 2 km of soft white sand, clear water, and spectacular views of Île Tintamarre and Saint-Barthélemy on the horizon.

  • Club Orient — The famous clothing-optional resort and beach section at the southern end of the bay. Even if you don't participate, it's a notable part of the island's culture.

  • Île Tintamarre — Visible from the beach, this uninhabited island with its famous "airplane beach" (a wrecked aircraft on the sand) is reachable by boat tour from Orient Bay.

  • Pinel Island — Just north of Orient Bay, visible across the channel, accessible by ferry from nearby Cul-de-Sac.

  • Water sports — Orient Bay is Saint-Martin's water-sports capital. Windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding, jet-skiing, parasailing, and Hobie Cat sailing are all available from rental kiosks along the central beach.

  • Swim and sunbathe — The calm northern end is ideal for families and casual swimming. The southern end has stronger currents and is better for experienced swimmers.

  • Take a boat trip — Several operators offer excursions to Tintamarre Island, Pinel Island, and snorkelling spots along the coast.

  • Restaurant-hop along the beach — The central stretch of Orient Bay is lined with beach restaurants offering everything from pizza to grilled lobster.

  • Wind- and kite-surfing lessons — Orient Bay's consistent trade winds make it one of the Caribbean's top windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations. Several schools offer equipment rental and lessons for all levels.

Food & Dining

  • Kontiki — The anchor restaurant on the central beach, serving grilled fish, pizza, burgers, and cocktails on a large terrace overlooking the sand.
  • Coco Beach — Beachfront dining with a French-Caribbean menu — fresh ceviche, grilled lobster, and salads. Popular for lunch.
  • Bikini Beach — A lively spot with sun loungers, a bar, and a menu of grilled meats and seafood. Known for its mojitos.
  • Le P'tit Bistro — Set back from the beach, this French bistro serves excellent escargots, duck confit, and crème brûlée in a garden setting.
  • Piazza — Italian-run spot near the beach for wood-fired pizzas and pasta.

Cafes & Nightlife

The beach bars along Orient Bay are the place to be for daytime drinking — Kontiki, Bikini Beach, and Coco Beach all serve rum punches, mojitos, and cold beers with your toes in the sand. The sunset views from Orient Bay face east over the Atlantic, so sunsets are not visible — instead, head to the western side of the island for sunset drinks. For evening nightlife, Sandy Ground or Grand Case are 15–20 minutes away.
