About Cul-de-Sac
Cul-de-Sac is a sheltered bay and residential area on the northeastern coast of Saint-Martin, opposite the small offshore island of Île de Pinel. The name means "bottom of the sack" in French, referring to the shape of the bay, which forms a natural cul-de-sac protected from the open Atlantic by a fringe of rocky islets. This quiet corner of the island is best known for its calm, shallow waters and as the departure point for ferries to Pinel Island, one of the top attractions on the French side. The area is predominantly residential, with a mix of private villas and small-scale holiday rentals set along the shoreline and hillside. There is no real town centre — the settlement is strung along the coastal road, with a handful of restaurants, a small beach, and the ferry dock. The climate is tropical and breezy, with cooling trade winds arriving off the Atlantic.

By Train
By Car / Road
Cul-de-Sac is reached via the coastal road from Grand Case (10 minutes south-east) or from Quartier d'Orleans/Oyster Pond (5 minutes north). The road winds along the coast with scenic views of the bay. Taxis are available but must be called from Marigot or Grand Case. Minibus collectivos pass along the main road but are infrequent.
The area is small enough to explore on foot if you are staying near the beach, but a rental car or scooter is recommended for easy access to restaurants, grocery shopping, and the ferry dock. There are no taxis based in Cul-de-Sac itself.
Things to do
Pinel Island — The main attraction. A 5-minute ferry ride across the channel brings you to this tiny uninhabited island with white-sand beaches, excellent snorkelling trails marked by buoys, and a beachfront restaurant. Ferry runs daily from the dock at Cul-de-Sac (about €12 round trip).
Petite Plage de Cul-de-Sac — A small but pleasant sandy beach adjacent to the ferry dock, with calm, shallow water ideal for children.
Île Tintamarre — A larger uninhabited island visible to the east, accessible by boat tour from Cul-de-Sac, with a long sandy beach and sea turtle sightings.
Snorkel at Pinel Island — The coral reefs around Pinel are among the best on the French side, with marked snorkel trails, tropical fish, and occasional sea turtles.
Take a boat trip to Tintamarre Island — Several operators offer half-day trips to this pristine island with its famous "airplane beach" (a beach with a wrecked aircraft) and excellent swimming.
Kayak and paddleboard — The calm, clear waters of the bay are perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, with rentals available at the beach.
Relax on Pinel Island — The island has two beach restaurants serving fresh seafood and cocktails, with sun loungers available for hire.
