How to reach

Mayenne has a train station on the TER line from Laval to Caen, with services to Laval (about 25 minutes) and Alençon. The D2 road connects to Laval and the A81 autoroute. Regional buses serve the local area. The nearest airports are Rennes and Caen.

The town centre is very walkable, with most sites within a short distance of each other. Taxis are available. A bicycle is useful for exploring the river valley. Parking is available near the castle and the town centre.

The Château de Mayenne is a Carolingian fortress that houses the Musée du Château with archaeological exhibits and local history displays. The Église Saint-Martin is a Romanesque church with a notable spire. The old town has half-timbered houses and narrow streets. The Parc des Capucins offers gardens and river views. The 12th-century Pont Notre-Dame spans the Mayenne.

Walk along the Mayenne river towpath, part of the Vélo Francette cycling route. Canoe and kayak on the river. Visit the Saturday morning market. Explore the nearby Forêt de Mayenne for hiking. The museum at the castle offers family activities.
