Argèles-sur-Mer is a coastal town in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, located on the Mediterranean near the Spanish border. It is best known for its long sandy beaches and the nearby Argèles Forest, a protected natural reserve of umbrella pines stretching along the coastline. The town has a dual character: a lively beachfront resort area and a more traditional Catalan-influenced village centre further inland.

How do you get there?

The town has its own railway station on the TER line from Perpignan to Portbou (Spain). Perpignan is about 20 minutes by train. By car, the A9 motorway connects Argèles to Perpignan. The nearest airport is Perpignan-Rivesaltes.

A local bus service connects the train station, village centre, and beach areas. The town is bicycle-friendly. Walking between the village and the beach takes about 25–30 minutes.

What are the things to do?

The Argèles Forest (Massif des Albères), a protected coastal pine forest. The 19th-century Fort Saint-Éloi. The Église Notre-Dame del Prat (14th century). The long beach stretches for several kilometres backed by pines.

Water sports: swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding. The Argèles Forest has hiking and mountain-bike trails. Aqualand water park is a family favourite.

Catalan cuisine: grilled sardines, anchovies, bullinada (fish stew), cargolade (grilled snails). Beachfront restaurants serve seafood platters and paella.

A high density of holiday apartments and villas near the beach. Hotels from budget seaside motels to comfortable three-star. Camping is popular in the Argèles Forest.

The covered market sells local olives, Catalan cheeses, Collioure anchovies, and Banyuls wine. Catalan pottery and espadrilles are popular souvenirs.
