Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Mozambique Channel, situated between northern Madagascar and Mozambique. Comprising two main islands — Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre — and several smaller islets, it is encircled by one of the largest and deepest lagoons in the Indian Ocean, protected by a double barrier reef. The archipelago is a unique blend of African, Malagasy, and French influences, with a predominantly Muslim population of around 310,000. Tourism infrastructure is modest, which is precisely its appeal: uncrowded diving, whale-watching from August to September, and a relaxed pace of life that feels far removed from metropolitan France.
When to Visit
The dry season from May to November offers the best conditions for travel, with clear skies, lower humidity, and accessible hiking trails. Temperatures are warm year-round (25–32°C). The wet season (November to May) brings heavy downpours and occasional cyclones. August and September are peak months for humpback whale sightings in the lagoon, while sea turtles nest from October to March. Ramadan affects dining options (many restaurants close during daylight hours). The Festival International de Jazz de Mamoudzou in June/July is the archipelago's main cultural event.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Mayotte has no rail network and limited public transport. The backbone of local mobility is the La Barge car ferry connecting Mamoudzou on Grande-Terre to Dzaoudzi on Petite-Terre every 30 minutes (€0.75 per foot passenger, €15 per car). Renting a car is the most practical option for exploring Grande-Terre, though roads are narrow and often muddy outside the dry season. Taxis brousse (bush taxis) can be hired for tours. The main airport is Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi Airport (DZA) on Petite-Terre, with flights to mainland France, Mauritius, and Madagascar.
Cuisine
Mahorian cuisine reflects the island's Swahili, Malagasy, and French heritage. Rice is the staple, served with fish, chicken, or goat in a coconut milk sauce known as mataba — cooked with cassava leaves, spinach, or other local greens. Seafood is excellent, including lobster, crabs, and grilled fish. Street food highlights include samoussas, brochettes (grilled meat skewers), and mkatra siniya (coconut bread). Local fruits like mangoes, bananas, papayas, and coconuts are abundant. The markets in Mamoudzou and Dzaoudzi are excellent for tasting Mahorian specialties. As a Muslim-majority island, alcohol is less prevalent but available in some hotels and restaurants.

WhatsAppCulture & Festivals
Mayotte's culture is deeply rooted in its Swahili heritage, with a strong Muslim identity. Traditional music features the m'godro (a one-stringed violin) and gaboussi (a lute-like instrument). The debaa is a traditional women's dance performed at weddings and celebrations. The Festival International de Jazz de Mamoudzou in June/July brings international artists to the island. Ramadan is widely observed, and the end of the month is marked by Aid el-Fitr celebrations with feasting and family gatherings. The archipelago's population speaks Mahorian (a Swahili dialect) alongside French.
