Le Tampon
La Réunion, France
Why visit Le Tampon?
Le Tampon spreads across the southern slopes of Réunion Island, ascending from 400 metres above sea level near Saint-Pierre to over 2,000 metres on the high pasture plateau of La Plaine des Cafres. The commune is laid out along a central ascending road divided by historic kilometre markers (Lignes and Kilomètres), transitioning from suburban neighbourhoods at lower elevations to agricultural dairy farms, geranium fields, and volcano access routes higher up.
Travelers use Le Tampon and its high-altitude village of Bourg-Murat as the primary base for exploring the active Piton de la Fournaise volcano. The commune also provides access to deep canyon lookouts over the Rivière des Remparts and the isolated valley of Grand Bassin.
Because of the steep elevation gradient, temperatures drop as you travel uphill. While lower Le Tampon stays warm with coastal breezes, the upper plains experience cool mountain air, morning fog, and brisk evenings that require warm clothing throughout the year.
