Why visit?

Réunion is a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 700 km east of Madagascar and 200 km southwest of Mauritius. This volcanic island is dominated by the active Piton de la Fournaise — one of the world's most active volcanoes — and three spectacular cirques (Salazie, Cilaos, and Mafate) that form a UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural park covering over 40% of the island. Its population of around 890,000 is a vibrant Creole mix of African, Indian, Chinese, Malagasy, and European heritage. The island offers exceptional hiking, canyoning, paragliding, and whale-watching, alongside black-sand beaches, waterfalls, and a distinctive cuisine that reflects its multicultural roots.

When is the best time to visit?

The austral winter (May–October) is the dry season and the ideal time for hiking, with cooler temperatures at altitude and clear skies offering the best views of the cirques and volcanic landscape. The austral summer (November–April) is hotter and wetter, with tropical cyclones possible between January and March. Whale-watching is at its peak from June to October. The Fête du Musique (June) and Festival Liberté Métisse (December) are cultural highlights. Piton de la Fournaise erupts regularly — check volcano monitoring websites if you hope to witness an eruption.

How do you get around?

Réunion has an excellent road network by island standards, with a dual carriageway along the west coast (Route des Tamarins) and scenic coastal roads elsewhere. A rental car is essential for independent exploration. Driving from Saint-Denis to Saint-Pierre takes about 1.5 hours via the west coast. The Route de Cilaos and Route de Salazie are winding mountain roads with spectacular views. There is no railway. Buses (Car Jaune) connect major towns but are infrequent. Helicopter flights are the only way to access the Cirque de Mafate, which has no roads. The main airport is Roland Garros Airport (RUN) near Sainte-Marie.

What should you eat?

Réunion's cuisine is a vibrant fusion of French, African, Indian, Chinese, and Malagasy influences, often referred to as 'cuisine créole.' The island's signature dish is the cari (similar to a curry), typically served with rice, grains (lentils or beans), and rougail (a spicy tomato and chilli condiment). Other must-try dishes include samoussas, bouchons (pork dumplings), and the famous 'rougail saucisse' (sausages in spicy tomato sauce). For dessert, try bonbon miel (honey cakes) or gâteau patate (sweet potato cake). Local rum distilleries offer tastings of the celebrated Réunion rhum arrangé.

What is the culture like?

Réunion's culture is a rich fusion of African, Indian, Chinese, European, and Malagasy traditions. Music is central, with traditional maloya and séga styles — rhythmic music accompanied by the tamtam drum and rattle — recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The island celebrates Diwali, Eid, Chinese New Year, and Christian festivals, reflecting its multicultural population. The Fête du Musique (June), Festival Liberté Métisse (December), and Sakifo music festival (July) are major events. Réunion's art scene includes vibrant Creole architecture, street art in Saint-Denis, and artisan crafts such as embroidery and basket-weaving.

What are the standout experiences?
