Why visit Saint-Etienne?

Saint-Étienne is a city in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, historically a centre of coal mining, arms manufacturing, and ribbon weaving. In recent decades it has reinvented itself as a city of design and culture, designated a UNESCO City of Design in 2010. The city is surrounded by the Pilat massif to the south and the Lyonnais mountains to the north.

How do you get there?

Saint-Étienne is served by Saint-Étienne – Bouthéon Airport (EBU) with limited flights. The TGV connects Saint-Étienne to Paris in about 2.5 hours. Regular TER trains run to Lyon (45 min), which has connections to the rest of France. The A72 autoroute connects the city to Lyon.

The Saint-Étienne tram network (three lines) connects the main districts. The city centre is walkable. A bus network serves the suburbs. A car is useful for exploring the surrounding Pilat massif.

What are the things to do?

The Cité du Design is a striking contemporary complex housed in a former arms factory. The Musée d'Art et d'Industrie showcases the city's manufacturing heritage. The Grand'Église and the Place du Peuple are in the centre. The mythical Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, home of AS Saint-Étienne, is a pilgrimage site for football fans.

Explore the Pilat Regional Natural Park south of the city, with excellent hiking and panoramic views of the Alps. Visit the Manufacture d'Armes building. Attend the Biennale Internationale Design exhibition.

Local specialities include the Saint-Étienne brioche and saucisson de Saint-Étienne. The region produces excellent goat cheeses, and the markets offer produce from the surrounding countryside.
