Nousiainen

Varsinais-Suomi, Finland

Why visit Nousiainen?

Nousiainen, in Varsinais-Suomi in southwestern Finland, is believed to have been the seat of Finland's first bishop until 1229 or 1249, when the seat moved to Turku. According to legend, Saint Henry — the first bishop and Finland's patron saint — was buried here in 1156; his relics were later moved to Turku around 1300. The municipality also stretches inland to Kuhankuono, marked by a historic boundary stone (Kuhankuonon rajakivi).
