Overview

Varsinais-Suomi, known in English as Finland Proper, is the southwestern corner of Finland, bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the south. The region centres on Turku, Finland's oldest city and former capital, which sits at the mouth of the Aura River and serves as the gateway to one of Europe's most remarkable archipelagos — thousands of islands stretching from the mainland coast into the Baltic Sea.

The landscape blends fertile agricultural lowlands, rolling inland hills, and an intricate coastline dotted with fishing villages, summer cottages, and island communities. The Salpausselkä glacial ridge runs through the southern part of the region, creating gentle elevations and picturesque lake country around Salo and Somero. This is one of Finland's sunniest and mildest regions, with a longer growing season than the rest of the country.

Varsinais-Suomi's identity is deeply historical. Turku Castle dates to the 1280s, and the medieval cathedral still anchors the city's spiritual life. The region has been bilingual for centuries — Swedish is widely spoken along the coast and in the archipelago, and many place names carry both Finnish and Swedish forms. For travellers, the region offers a compelling mix of medieval history, island-hopping adventures, Nordic cuisine, and relaxed coastal living.

When to Visit

The best time is from late May through September. June and July offer the longest days and warmest weather (18–24°C), ideal for exploring the archipelago, cycling the countryside, and enjoying outdoor festivals. Midsummer (juhannus) in late June is celebrated with bonfires, especially along the coast and on the islands.

Turku's event calendar peaks in summer: the Ruisrock festival (July) brings major acts to an island venue, and the medieval market in June recreates the city's past. The Naantali Music Festival (June–July) draws classical performers. Autumn (September–October) is pleasant for harvest-season food events and forest walks with autumn colours, while winter is quieter but atmospheric — Turku's Christmas declaration from the balcony of Brinkkala House is a Finnish tradition.

Getting Around

Turku is the regional hub. Direct trains from Helsinki take about 2 hours on the main line via the Rantarata coastal route. Long-distance and regional buses connect Turku to Salo (1 hour), Naantali (30 min), Uusikaupunki (1.5 hours), and other towns via Matkahuolto. Local buses serve the greater Turku area including Kaarina and Raisio.

A car is essential for exploring the archipelago and inland towns at your own pace. The road network is good — Highway 1 (E18) connects Turku to Helsinki, and Highway 8 runs northward along the coast. Distances within the region are modest: Turku to Salo is 55 km, to Naantali 18 km, to Uusikaupunki 75 km.

The archipelago is served by a network of car ferries (free of charge on most routes) connecting the islands in a chain from Parainen and Kemiönsaari outward. Bicycles are excellent for island-hopping — the Archipelago Trail is a marked cycling route linking bridges and ferries through the island chain. Coastal cruise boats operate seasonally from Turku and Naantali.

Cuisine

Turku and the surrounding region are a stronghold of Finnish food culture. The city's riverside restaurants along the Aura serve everything from traditional Finnish home cooking to modern Nordic cuisine. The Turku Market Hall (Kauppahalli) is a destination for local cheeses, smoked fish, fresh berries, and pastries.

Regional specialties include archipelago bread (saaristolaisleipä), a dense dark rye traditionally baked for long sea voyages, and smoked fish — particularly vendace, salmon, and Baltic herring. The archipelago's small harbours often have summer kiosks selling fresh-caught fish. Naantali and Kustavi have seafood restaurants drawing on local catch.

Inland, the farms of Loimaa, Somero, and Pöytyä produce root vegetables, grains, and dairy. The region's apple orchards around Vehmaa and elsewhere contribute to seasonal cider and juice production. Vegetarian dining is well served in Turku, with several dedicated restaurants, but options thin out in rural areas — plan ahead outside the city.

Culture & Festivals

Turku's cultural life is rich year-round. Ruisrock (early July) is one of Finland's largest and oldest rock festivals, held on Ruissalo island. Turku Music Festival (August) brings classical and contemporary performances to historic venues. The Medieval Market (June) recreates medieval Turku with crafts, food, and performances in the old town.

Naantali Music Festival (June–July) is a prestigious classical event in the atmospheric setting of the Naantali Convent. The Archipelago Sea Jazz festival brings performances to island venues. The Moomin World theme park in Naantali (open June–August) is a family draw inspired by Tove Jansson's beloved characters.

Finnish-Swedish culture is woven throughout the region. Swedish-language theatre, choir traditions, and midsummer celebrations are particularly strong on Kemiönsaari and in the coastal communities. Local artisan culture thrives in small workshops producing ceramics, textiles, and woodcraft, especially along the Archipelago Trail.
