Ristijärvi is the smallest municipality in Kainuu by population (around 1,150), covering roughly 900 km² of lakes and forest. It is known for Karppalanmylly, a 1915 turbine watermill on the Karppala and Virpelä yards considered one of the best-preserved historic mill complexes in the Kainuu region, and for the Saukkovaara ski area, a small resort with about 10 km of pistes and two lifts.
