Kainuu is a sparsely populated region in northeastern Finland, bordering Russian Karelia to the east and stretching from the shores of Lake Oulujärvi to the wilderness fells near Kuusamo. This is a land of vast boreal forests, deep bogs, and clear rivers — a place where nature dominates the landscape and human settlement is concentrated in small towns scattered across enormous distances. Kainuu is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Europe, offering travellers a sense of solitude and wildness that is increasingly rare.
The regional capital, Kajaani, is a small but lively town built around the ruins of a 17th-century castle on the banks of the Kajaaninjoki river. Beyond Kajaani, the region's attractions are spread across a vast area: the internationally renowned Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the legendary Karhunkierros hiking trail through Oulanka National Park, and several other national parks protecting pristine wilderness areas. Wildlife — bears, wolves, wolverines, and elk — is abundant, and the forests around Kuhmo have served as filming locations for major nature documentaries.
Kainuu is a destination for those seeking authentic Finnish wilderness experiences, whether that means hiking through old-growth forest, skiing at Vuokatti or Ruka, or simply experiencing the silence and beauty of one of Europe's last great wild places.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Kainuu depends on your interests. Summer (June–August) offers long days (up to 20 hours of daylight), warm temperatures, and access to hiking trails, fishing, and berry picking. July is peak season, particularly during the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival (mid-July), which draws international audiences.
Winter (December–March) brings heavy snowfall — the northern parts of Kainuu receive some of the heaviest snow in Finland, with over a metre of cover being normal. This is prime time for skiing at Ruka, Vuokatti, and Iso-Syöte resorts, as well as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Autumn (September–October) offers spectacular ruska colours and excellent mushroom and berry picking, while spring (April–May) is a quieter transitional period.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Kajaani is the main transport hub. There are flights from Helsinki to Kajaani Airport and Kuusamo Airport. VR trains connect Kajaani to Oulu (around 1.5 hours) and to southern Finland via the eastern north-south line through Kuopio and Iisalmi. Further north, intercity buses are the only public transport option for those not driving.
Matkahuolto operates coach services along the major highways, with daily connections from Kajaani to Suomussalmi, Kuhmo, Hyrynsalmi, and other towns. Services are more frequent on weekdays during the school year but reduced in summer and weekends. A car is essential for exploring the region's national parks and remote villages — distances are long (Kajaani to Kuusamo is roughly 170 km; Kajaani to Suomussalmi is about 85 km).
Taxis are available in Kajaani and larger towns. Korpitaxi serves the Kainuu region, and apps like Valopilkku and 02 Taksi operate in the area.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Kainuu's culinary traditions are rooted in hearty, simple fare adapted to the harsh northern climate. The region's signature dish is rönttönen, a small open-faced pie made with a barley or rye crust and filled with sweetened mashed potato and lingonberry. It is traditionally served with coffee and is unique to the Kainuu region.
Other local foods include fresh fish from the region's many lakes (perch, pike, vendace), game meats such as elk and reindeer, and wild mushrooms and berries gathered from the forests. Rye bread and porridge are staples. In Kajaani, restaurants serve modern Finnish cuisine alongside traditional dishes. Dining options in smaller towns may be limited, so self-catering in a lakeside cabin is a common and rewarding approach.
What is the culture like?
The Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival (mid-July) is Kainuu's most prestigious cultural event, and one of the most important chamber music festivals in the world. For two weeks, leading international musicians perform in intimate venues across the small town of Kuhmo, drawing around 35,000 visitors and some 70 concerts. The festival's setting in the remote Finnish wilderness adds to its unique atmosphere.
Other cultural traditions include the Karelianism heritage — the villages of Kuivajärvi, Hietajärvi, and Rimpi were important to the 19th-century movement that shaped Finnish national identity and contributed to the Kalevala epic. Local folk traditions, handcrafts, and the sauna culture remain strong throughout the region.
