Why visit?

Etelä-Savo (South Savo) is a lakeland region in eastern Finland, centred on the historic towns of Mikkeli and Savonlinna. Often called the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, the region is defined by its vast network of interconnected lakes, forested ridges, and a deeply rooted lake culture. The Saimaa lake system, one of the largest freshwater bodies in Europe, dominates the landscape, offering thousands of kilometres of shoreline, islands, and waterways that shape both daily life and travel.

The region has a long history as a cultural crossroads between east and west. Savonlinna, perched on islands in Lake Saimaa, is home to the internationally renowned Savonlinna Opera Festival held each summer in the medieval Olavinlinna castle. Mikkeli, the regional capital, played a pivotal role in Finnish military history and retains a dignified, small-city charm with museums, parks, and a lively market square.

For travellers, Etelä-Savo is a paradise of lake-based recreation — boating, fishing, swimming, and lakeside cabin holidays. The region's national parks, Linnansaari and Kolovesi, protect pristine lake-and-forest ecosystems and are among the best places in Finland to see the endangered Saimaa ringed seal.

When is the best time to visit?

The prime season for visiting Etelä-Savo is from mid-June through August, when the lakes are warm enough for swimming and boating, and the long days (up to 19 hours near midsummer) make the most of the lakeland scenery. July is peak season, particularly during the Savonlinna Opera Festival (typically early to mid-July), when the town comes alive with music and visitors.

Late May and early June offer quieter lakeside experiences with spring wildflowers, while September brings beautiful autumn colours (ruska) and harvest season. Winter (December–March) is cold and snowy, with opportunities for ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and the uniquely Finnish experience of lakeside sauna followed by ice swimming. Some services and attractions are reduced outside the summer season.

How do you get around?

Mikkeli and Savonlinna are the main transport hubs. VR trains connect Mikkeli to Helsinki (around 2 hours) and Pieksämäki (30 minutes), and Savonlinna to Pieksämäki and Joensuu. However, Savonlinna's rail service is limited and the bus may be more practical for some routes.

Matkahuolto runs intercity and regional buses linking Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Pieksämäki, and the smaller municipalities. Distances: Mikkeli to Savonlinna is about 90 km by road; Mikkeli to Pieksämäki is roughly 75 km.

A car is strongly recommended for exploring the lakeside villages, national parks, and rural areas. Roads wind through forests and along lake shores, offering scenic drives. Boats and water taxis operate in summer for reaching island destinations, particularly in Linnansaari and Kolovesi national parks. Local taxis are available in Mikkeli and Savonlinna.

What should you eat?

South Savo's cuisine reflects its lakeside setting and forest heritage. Fish is central — vendace (muikku), perch, and pike-perch are staple catches, often served fried in butter (fried vendace, or "paistetut muikut", is a regional classic). Smoked fish, particularly salmon and vendace, is widely available at lakeside smokehouses and markets.

Traditional dishes include karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pasties, a legacy of the eastern Finnish heritage), rye bread, and mushroom-based dishes from the surrounding forests. Berries — lingonberries, blueberries, and cloudberries — feature in desserts and preserves. In Mikkeli and Savonlinna, restaurants serve modern Finnish cuisine using local ingredients. Sauna-smoked meats and fish are a speciality worth seeking out.

What is the culture like?

The Savonlinna Opera Festival (early to mid-July) is the region's flagship cultural event, attracting international audiences to performances staged inside the 15th-century Olavinlinna castle. The festival programme includes classic operas, concerts, and recitals in a dramatic lakeside setting.

Other notable events include the Sulkava Rowing Race (early July), a gruelling long-distance rowing competition on Lake Saimaa that draws thousands of participants and spectators. Mikkeli hosts various cultural events year-round, including theatre, art exhibitions, and the Mikkeli Music Festival. Local traditions include folk music, sauna culture, and the eastern Finnish craft of birch-bark weaving.
