Korem

Tigrai, Ethiopia

Why visit Korem?

Korem is a town in the highlands of southern Tigrai, at an elevation of about 2,539 m near the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment overlooking the Afar lowlands, and about 6 km south of Lake Hashenge, Tigrai's only lake. Korem holds a difficult but significant place in modern history: it was the site of one of the largest relief camps during Ethiopia's 1983–1985 famine, housing tens of thousands of people, and it was here in October 1984 that a BBC news report broadcast the famine's true scale to the world, a broadcast credited with catalyzing the global relief response that led to Live Aid in 1985. The town today serves as a highland stop for travelers moving between Mekelle and the Amhara Region.
