Wukro

Tigrai, Ethiopia

Why visit Wukro?

Wukro (also spelled Wukro Kilte Awulaelo) is a town in eastern Tigrai, known for the nearby rock-hewn Church of St. Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Ethiopia's most spectacular churches — perched on a sheer cliff face in the Gheralta massif.

How do you get there?

By bus or minibus from Mekelle (50 km south) or Adigrat (40 km north).

What are the things to do?

  • Abuna Yemata Guh: A monolithic church cut into a cliff in the Gheralta massif near Hawzen, with a dome and architecture dated to the 6th century and wall paintings from the 15th. Reaching it requires a steep hand-and-foothold climb up bare rock, a crossing over a natural stone bridge with sheer drops on either side, and a final narrow wooden footbridge — it is often cited as one of the most inaccessible places of worship in the world.

  • Wukro Market: A local market.

  • Rock church climbing: The ascent to Abuna Yemata Guh (roughly a two-hour approach hike plus the exposed final climb) is the main draw of the area; a local guide/priest is needed to access the church itself.
