Why visit Shire?
Shire, also called Shire Inda Selassie ("House of the Trinity"), is a town in western Tigray and the administrative centre of the Semien Mi'irabawi (North-Western) Zone. It has a long history — an early charter of Emperor Dawit I mentions it as far back as the 14th century, it was the site of the 1936 Battle of Shire during the Italian invasion, and it saw the first clash of the Tigray People's Liberation Front with government forces in 1975. Today it functions as a market and administrative town for the surrounding countryside, and as a waypoint for travellers heading between Axum and the Eritrean border area.
