Paide

Järvamaa, Estonia

Why visit Paide?

Paide, with a population of roughly 7,700, serves as the administrative centre of Järva County in central Estonia. Located along the Pärnu River near the junction of major national highways, the town sits 85 km southeast of Tallinn and 100 km northwest of Tartu. Founded around a Livonian Order fortress built in 1265, Paide gained town rights in 1291. Its defining feature is Vallimägi, a central park containing the reconstructed 30-metre octagonal castle tower (Vallitorn) and remaining fortress ramparts.

Travelers visit Paide primarily to explore the Wittenstein Time Centre inside the castle tower and to use the town as a base for exploring the surrounding central Estonian region. Paide hosts the annual Opinion Festival (Arvamusfestival) each August, drawing speakers and visitors from across the country to open-air debates on Vallimägi hill.

The town experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers bring mild temperatures averaging 18 °C to 23 °C and up to 18 hours of daylight in June. Winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures frequently dropping between -3 °C and -10 °C and daylight shrinking to fewer than seven hours in December and January.
