Kohtla-Jarve
Ida-Virumaa, Estonia
Why visit Kohtla-Jarve?
Kohtla-Järve is Estonia's fifth-largest city and the historic heart of the country's oil shale industry. Located about 5 km west of Jõhvi, it is an industrial centre with a population of roughly 30,000, spread across several districts that were originally separate settlements. The city was created in 1946 through the merger of several mining towns, and its name literally means "Cockerel Lake" in Estonian.
The entire identity of Kohtla-Järve is built around oil shale (põlevkivi) — a sedimentary rock that is mined and processed here to produce oil and electricity. The industry began in the early 20th century and expanded massively during the Soviet period, turning the region into a major energy-producing centre for the entire north-west of the USSR. Today, the oil shale industry remains the economic backbone of the region, though production has declined since independence.
For visitors, Kohtla-Järve offers a unique glimpse into Estonia's industrial heritage. The Ahtme mining museum, the Soviet-era architecture, and the surrounding slag heaps and mine shafts create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Estonia. The best time to visit is May–September; the city is functional rather than beautiful, but its industrial character is genuinely interesting.
