About Barentu
Barentu is the capital of the Gash-Barka Region, located in the western lowlands about 90 km west of Asmara. The name is derived from the local Kunama language. The town sits on the seasonal Gash River and serves as the commercial and administrative hub for western Eritrea. Its population is a mix of Tigre, Kunama, Nara, and other ethnic groups, giving it a distinctive multicultural character. Barentu has a hot, semi-arid climate with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C during the hottest months.

Barentu is accessible by a paved road from Asmara via Agordat. Buses and minibuses run from Asmara's bus station, with the journey taking about 2-3 hours. Shared taxis also connect Barentu to Agordat and Tesseney.
The town centre is compact and walkable. Shared taxis are available for trips to outlying neighbourhoods and surrounding villages.
