Why visit Borg El Arab?
Borg El Arab is a planned satellite city located approximately 50 km southwest of Alexandria, developed in the late 20th century as part of Egypt's efforts to relieve population pressure on the coastal metropolis. The city was designed with a grid layout, wide boulevards, and modern infrastructure, making it stand out from the organic sprawl of older Egyptian urban centers. It serves primarily as a residential and administrative hub, though it also functions as a gateway to the Mediterranean coast and the surrounding agricultural lowlands.
The city sits on relatively flat terrain just inland from the coast, with a climate similar to Alexandria's—hot, humid summers and mild winters—but with slightly more extreme temperatures due to its distance from the sea breeze. Borg El Arab is notable for hosting Borg El Arab International Airport, which serves as an alternative gateway to Alexandria and the western Nile Delta. The city's character is more subdued than Alexandria's, offering a quieter, more modern Egyptian urban experience with newer buildings, less congestion, and a growing commercial sector.
As a destination, Borg El Arab appeals to travelers seeking a base near the Mediterranean without the crowds and intensity of central Alexandria. It is also a practical stopover for those connecting through the airport or exploring the coastal road toward Marsa Matruh and the North Coast resorts. The city's modern planning, green spaces, and proximity to both the coast and the Delta make it a convenient, if not particularly tourist-heavy, destination.

By Plane
Borg El Arab International Airport (HBE) is located within the city itself, making it the most convenient airport for reaching this area. The airport handles domestic flights from Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada, and Sharm el-Sheikh, with Egyptair as the primary carrier. International flights arrive from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) and Gulf destinations. From the airport, taxis to the city center take approximately 15–20 minutes and cost around LE100–200. There is no public airport shuttle service.
By Car / Road
Borg El Arab is well connected by road to Alexandria via the Alexandria–El Alamein coastal highway, a drive of approximately 50 km taking 45 minutes to one hour depending on traffic. The road quality is good, and the route passes through flat agricultural land. Buses and microbuses run frequently between Alexandria and Borg El Arab from the Tahrir Square bus station in Alexandria. From Cairo, the drive is approximately 250 km via the Desert Road, taking about 2.5–3 hours.
Borg El Arab's grid layout makes it relatively easy to navigate compared to older Egyptian cities. Taxis are the primary mode of local transport, with short trips within the city costing LE30–60. Ride-hailing apps are available but less widespread than in Alexandria. Microbuses connect the city to surrounding towns and to Alexandria, departing from designated stands. The city is not particularly walkable for long distances due to wide roads and limited pedestrian infrastructure, though the planned neighborhoods are more pleasant to stroll than the commercial center.
