About Vilcabamba
Vilcabamba — its name means "Sacred Valley" — is a quiet, scenic town in the southern Ecuadorian Andes, in the province of Loja (EC-L). It sits close to the northern reaches of Podocarpus National Park, one of Ecuador's most biodiverse protected areas, where cloud forest gives way to high alpine páramo. The town is small and walkable, built around a central plaza ringed with cafés and restaurants, and has long drawn a steady community of international travellers and expatriates who come for the easy pace and the surrounding mountains.
The valley is famous as the "Valley of Longevity," a reputation tied to its local spring water and gentle, consistent climate, and Vilcabamba's draw is overwhelmingly the outdoors: trekking, horse riding, birding, and biking into the hills, balanced with low-key wellness — massage, yoga, and spa days. The jagged peak of Mandango rises dramatically over the town and is its signature landmark.
At an elevation of roughly 1,500 m (about 5,000 ft) and a short distance south of the equator, Vilcabamba enjoys a mild, spring-like climate year round, which is what makes the gardens and orchards here so productive. There's no harsh season to avoid, though the surrounding trails are most pleasant in drier conditions; carry rain protection regardless, as cloud-forest weather shifts quickly.

Vilcabamba is about a one-hour bus ride from the city of Loja, the nearest hub. Buses run roughly every hour and cost about $1.25–1.30, taking 1 to 1½ hours to/from the Loja bus station.
International access is possible from Peru: there are buses from Piura (about 10 hours, $10) on Peru's Panamerican Highway three times daily. Access is also possible from Iquitos and Chachapoyas in Peru via the border crossing at Balsas and Zumba. Transportes Loja runs buses from Loja to destinations throughout Ecuador.
The town is small and easily walked. A camioneta (pickup-truck taxi) cooperative operates from the main square; rides cost about $1 to get almost anywhere in and around town. For exploring further afield, you can rent a mountain bike (see Do).
Things to do
Rumi Wilco Nature Reserve — A protected forest area run by a family of Argentinian biologists, good for walks, birding, and repeat visits. The entrance is about a 15-minute walk from the village square (ask for directions). $2 per person. Also offers eco-lodging and camping (see Sleep).
