Sanchez

Cibao Nordeste, Dominican Republic

Why visit Sanchez?

Sánchez is a historic port town at the head of Samaná Bay in the Samaná province of the Cibao Nordeste region. With a population of around 12,000, it was once one of the most important ports in the Dominican Republic — the primary export point for the country's cacao, coconut, and tobacco during the 19th century. Today, it is a quiet, somewhat neglected town with faded colonial architecture and a sense of faded grandeur.

The town sits at the southwestern corner of Samaná Bay, where the Río Yuna empties into the sea. The surrounding area includes the wetlands of the Yuna River delta, mangrove forests, and access to Los Haitises National Park. Sánchez has a raw, authentic Dominican character — it is not a tourist destination but offers a glimpse into the country's maritime history and agricultural past.

The climate is tropical, with temperatures averaging 25–32°C. The driest months are December through April. The rainy season (May–October) can cause flooding in low-lying areas near the river.
