Santa Barbara de Samana
Cibao Nordeste, Dominican Republic
Why visit Santa Barbara de Samana?
Santa Bárbara de Samaná is the capital of the Samaná province, located on the southern coast of the Samaná Peninsula in the Cibao Nordeste region of the Dominican Republic. With a population of around 15,000, it is a small but vibrant waterfront town known primarily as the gateway to whale watching in Samaná Bay — one of the most important humpback whale breeding grounds in the North Atlantic.
The town sits on the sheltered Bay of Samaná, backed by steep, jungle-covered hills. Its waterfront malecón is lined with restaurants, tour operators, and colorful buildings. Samaná has a diverse cultural heritage; in the early 19th century, freed American slaves settled here, and their descendants maintain a distinct English-speaking community known as the Samaná Americans.
The climate is tropical, with temperatures averaging 25–31°C. The driest months are December through April, which coincides with whale watching season (January–March). The rainy season (May–October) brings heavier rainfall but also lush green landscapes.
