Access is by road from Djibouti City. 4WD is essential for off-road travel. Minibuses connect main towns on paved roads.

Sweet tea with spices is the national drink. Camel milk is traditional. Bottled water is essential as tap water is not safe. Alcohol is available in hotels only.

Small hotels and guesthouses operate in regional centres. In remote areas, basic accommodation is limited — book ahead in Djibouti City before travelling. Camping is possible in some areas with a local guide.

Spices, traditional textiles, and khat leaves are sold in local markets. Handicrafts are limited — look for silver jewellery and woven baskets.

Djibouti City, other regional centres, and natural attractions such as Lac Assal and Lake Abbe are accessible by road.
