About Kromeriz

Kroměříž (pronounced Kraw-muh-reezh) is a picturesque town in the Zlín Region of Moravia, Czechia, celebrated for its UNESCO World Heritage castle and gardens. Often called "the Athens of Haná" for its cultural refinement, the town stands on the River Morava at the foot of the Chřiby mountain range. For centuries it served as the residence of the Olomouc bishops and archbishops, leaving behind a legacy of baroque splendour.

The town's crown jewel is the Kroměříž Castle (also known as the Archbishop's Palace), whose lavish interiors were famously used as a filming location for Miloš Forman's Amadeus. Behind the palace, the extensive gardens — including an English-style landscape park and a formal Italian flower garden designed by Filiberto Lucchese and Giovanni Pietro Tencalla — cover over 10 hectares and are perfect for leisurely strolls.

Kroměříž enjoys a temperate continental climate. Summers (June–August, 20–27°C) are warm and ideal for exploring the gardens. Winters (December–February, around -2 to 4°C) are quiet and cold. Spring brings blooming gardens; autumn offers mild colours. The compact historic centre radiates from the main square and is entirely walkable.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Brno–Tuřany (BRQ), roughly 110 km southwest. From the airport, travel to Brno by bus or taxi, then take a train or bus onward to Kroměříž. Alternatively, Ostrava Airport (OSR), about 100 km northeast, may offer some useful connections. Expect 2–3 hours total travel from either airport to Kroměříž.

By Train

Kroměříž has a railway station a short walk from the town centre. Trains run to Olomouc (about 1 hour) and Brno (1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes), mostly requiring changes at Hulín or Kojetín. Check IDOS (idos.cz) for current timetables and integrated transport details.

Kroměříž is well connected by road. From Brno, it is about 110 km via the D1 motorway and local roads, taking roughly 1.5 hours. From Olomouc, the distance is approximately 55 km (about 50 minutes). Direct bus services run to Brno (1 hour 15 minutes).
