About Chomutov

Chomutov is a city in the Ústecký kraj region of north-western Czechia, situated at the foot of the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains). Founded in the 13th century, the city grew around mining and later became an industrial centre during the communist era. With a population of around 47,000, it is the largest city in the western Ore Mountains and serves as a gateway to the mountain resorts and hiking areas above.

The city centre features a reconstructed main square (Mírové náměstí) with a Gothic church and several historic buildings, though much of the urban fabric was rebuilt during the socialist period. Chomutov has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is May through September for hiking and outdoor activities, while winter brings skiing opportunities in the nearby mountains.

The city is divided into several districts, with the historic core around the main square, industrial zones to the north, and residential panel housing estates on the outskirts. The nearby town of Jirkov and the village of Pesvice are within easy reach.
