Why visit?

Pardubický kraj (Pardubice Region) stretches across eastern Bohemia, from the fertile Elbe River plain in the west to the highlands of the Bohemian-Moravian border and the foothills of Orlické Mountains in the east. The region is named after its capital, Pardubice, a city famous for its gingerbread, horse racing (the Velká Pardubická steeplechase), and the historic Pernštejn family legacy reflected in the city's Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

The region offers remarkable diversity: the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) rock formations in its northwest corner, the Králický Sněžník mountains and Hanušovice highlands in the east, the landscape of the Žďárské vrchy hills, and the historic towns of Litomyšl (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Chrudim, and Polička.

When is the best time to visit?

May to September is the best period, with warm temperatures (20–27°C). The Velká Pardubická steeplechase (October) is the region's biggest annual event. Litomyšl's Smetanova Litomyšl opera festival (June–July) draws music lovers to the UNESCO-listed château. Winter (December–February) is cold and quiet, but the Králický Sněžník mountains offer cross-country skiing. Spring and autumn are excellent for cycling on the region's well-maintained bike trails.

What should you eat?

Pardubice is synonymous with gingerbread (pardubický perník), a tradition dating to the 16th century. The Elbe valley produces excellent white wines. Pardubice's Velká Pardubická steeplechase has inspired pub food traditions — the "race dinner" (dostihová večeře) typically features roast beef with dumplings. Litomyšl is known for its Smetana cheese and smoked meat. In the Orlické Mountains, wild mushroom dishes and forest berry desserts feature on autumn menus.

What is the culture like?

The Velká Pardubická steeplechase (October) is the region's defining event. The Smetanova Litomyšl opera festival (June–July) is an internationally renowned celebration of Bedřich Smetana. Pardubice's Pernštejn Night (August) features historical re-enactments at the castle. The Chrudim Puppet Festival (June) celebrates the town's marionette tradition.
