About Ostrava
Ostrava is a city of 290,000 people in the borderland of Moravia and Silesia, the third-largest city in Czechia and the centre of the country's second-largest urban agglomeration. Founded in the 13th century, Ostrava was transformed by the discovery of extensive coal deposits in the 18th century, growing from a small provincial town into one of the largest industrial centres in Central Europe. As a major steel manufacturing hub, it suffered heavy destruction during World War II and was long known as one of the most polluted cities in the EU. Today, the city's former industrial areas have been spectacularly transformed into cultural centres and tourist attractions, giving Ostrava a unique character that blends gritty industrial heritage with vibrant contemporary culture.
The climate is continental: cold winters (January average around −2 °C) and warm summers (July average around 18 °C). The city receives moderate snowfall. Summer is the best time to visit, with long days and numerous outdoor festivals, including the famous Colours of Ostrava music festival in July. Winters are cold but manageable. Ostrava is at the confluence of four rivers — the Odra, Opavice, Lučina, and Ostravice — and its layout reflects this watery geography.
The city is divided into several districts: the historic centre (around Prokešovo náměstí), the industrial Dolní Vítkovice area, the residential southern suburbs, and the suburban sprawl extending toward Poland and Slovakia. The main train stations — Ostrava hl.n. in the north and Ostrava-Svinov in the west — are not within walking distance from the historic centre, though Ostrava-Stodolní station is close to the old town.
