Overview

Královéhradecký kraj (Hradec Králové Region) occupies northeastern Czechia, stretching from the fertile Elbe River plain to the Czech-Polish border crest of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). The region is defined by this dramatic transition from flat agricultural lowlands to Czechia's highest mountain range, culminating at Sněžka (1,603 m). Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP) is the crown jewel — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of alpine meadows, glacial cirques, plunging waterfalls, and ancient spruce forests.

Beyond the mountains, the region boasts beautiful historic towns: Hradec Králové (the regional capital, renowned for its Art Nouveau and modern architecture), Jičín (the gateway to the Bohemian Paradise rock formations), and the mountain resorts of Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, and Trutnov. The region also contains the remarkable Adršpach–Teplice Rocks, a labyrinth of towering sandstone pillars, and the safari zoo in Dvůr Králové nad Labem.

When to Visit

Winter (December–March) is prime season for skiing in Krkonoše, with resorts like Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou offering well-groomed slopes. Summer (June–August) is the best time for hiking in Krkonoše National Park, with wildflowers blooming in the alpine meadows and temperatures a pleasant 15–22°C. September is perfect for low-altitude hiking and visiting towns. The Adršpach rocks are best visited in spring or autumn when crowds are smaller.

Cuisine

Mountain cuisine dominates in Krkonoše, with hearty dishes designed to fuel a day on the slopes. Krkonošské kyselo is the signature dish — a sour soup made from fermented rye bread, mushrooms, eggs, and potatoes. Smaženice (wild mushroom scramble) is a popular forest-foraged dish. Bramborové knedlíky (potato dumplings) are more common here than elsewhere. Trout from mountain streams is served fresh. Trutnov's Pivovar Krakonoš brews the famous Krakonoš lager.
