Why visit Pisek?

Písek is a town of approximately 30,000 inhabitants in South Bohemia, known for having the oldest stone bridge in the Czech Republic. The name "Písek" means "sand," referring to gold prospecting on the Otava River. In the Middle Ages, Písek was one of the most populous and important royal cities in Bohemia, located on a trade route connecting Bohemia with Southern Europe.

The town features a nice small historic centre with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The Písek Stone Bridge, built in the 13th century, is older than Prague's Charles Bridge. The Prácheň Museum, housed in a former castle, showcases local history and art. The climate follows the South Bohemian pattern: pleasant summers (17–24°C) and cold winters (-3–5°C).
