Sumava National Park

Why visit Sumava National Park?
Sumava National Park (Národní park Šumava) is one of the largest protected areas in Central Europe, covering over 680 km² along the Czech-German-Austrian border in the South Bohemian Region. Established in 1991, the park protects vast stretches of montane spruce and fir forests, peat bogs, glacial lakes, and the headwaters of the Vltava River. Often called the "Green Roof of Europe," Sumava is prized for its unspoiled wilderness and exceptional biodiversity, including lynx, black grouse, and rare butterfly species.
The climate is cool and moist, with winter temperatures frequently dropping below -10°C and snow lasting from November through April. Summers are mild, averaging 15–20°C, making June through September the ideal visiting window. The park is sparsely populated, with small villages and gateway towns serving as bases for exploration. Key access points include Kvilda, Srní, and Vimperk on the Czech side, and the gateway towns of Horní Planá and Železná Ruda.

By Train
The regional rail line from České Budějovice to Železná Ruda runs along the park's eastern edge, with stops at Vimperk and Strakonice. Czech Railways (ČD) operates connections from Prague via Plzeň. Journey time from Prague to Vimperk is approximately 2.5–3 hours with one transfer. Use the IDOS website for current timetables.
