Why visit Prachatice?
Prachatice is a historic town of approximately 11,000 inhabitants in the South Bohemian Region, situated at the edge of the Sumava foothills. Founded in the 13th century as a trading post on the "Golden Trail" (Zlatá stezka), a salt trade route connecting Bavaria with Bohemia, the town prospered from medieval salt commerce.
The town centre features a well-preserved Renaissance and Baroque townscape, with a picturesque town square lined with arcaded houses. The historic town walls and gates remain largely intact. Prachatice serves as a gateway to the Sumava National Park and is a good base for exploring the South Bohemian countryside. Summers are mild (17–24°C) and winters cold (-3–5°C), with the town providing a quieter alternative to more tourist-heavy destinations.
