About Songo-La Maya
Songo-La Maya is a small municipality in the Santiago de Cuba province, situated about 40 km northwest of the provincial capital. The town is named after the La Maya River that flows through the area and the indigenous Songo people who originally inhabited the region. It grew as a sugar cane and tobacco processing centre during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The municipality has a rural, agricultural character with a small urban centre. Sugar mills once dominated the local economy, though many have closed or reduced operations since the Soviet-era collapse. Tobacco, coffee, and cattle farming remain important. The surrounding landscape is a mix of flat agricultural land and rolling foothills approaching the Sierra Maestra.
The climate is tropical with a distinct rainy season (May–October) and drier, cooler months (November–April). The dry season is preferable for visiting, especially for exploring the countryside. Temperatures average 28–32°C year-round, with summer months feeling hotter due to humidity.
