Yaguajay

Sancti Spíritus, Cuba

About Yaguajay

Yaguajay is a small town in the northeastern corner of Sancti Spíritus Province, Cuba. It is best known for its role in the Cuban Revolution: on 30 December 1958, rebel forces under Camilo Cienfuegos captured the local military barracks in one of the final battles before Batista's flight. Today the barracks houses a museum commemorating the event.

The town sits on flat agricultural land between the Zaza River and the coast, surrounded by sugarcane fields and cattle ranches. Yaguajay has a population of roughly 15,000 and retains a quiet, working-town character. The climate is tropical with a dry season November–April and rainy season May–October.
