About Guane

Guane is a small town in the western part of Pinar del Río province, Cuba, and the seat of the municipality of the same name. Located approximately 50 km west of the provincial capital, it is one of the oldest settlements in the region, founded in the 16th century during the Spanish colonial period. The town has a quiet, agricultural character typical of rural western Cuba.

The economy of Guane revolves around tobacco cultivation, livestock, and forestry. The surrounding area features rolling hills, pine forests, and tobacco fields. The town has a modest population and retains much of its colonial-era layout, with a central plaza and low-rise buildings. The climate is tropical, averaging 24–30°C, with the dry season (November–April) being the most pleasant time to visit.

By Plane

The nearest airport is José Martí International Airport (HAV) in Havana, approximately 200 km east. The drive takes about 3 hours. Pinar del Río city is approximately 50 km east.

By Train

By Car / Road

Guane is accessible via secondary roads from the Carretera Central, approximately 200 km west of Havana and 50 km west of Pinar del Río. The road from Pinar del Río is paved but narrow. No regular bus service; private transport or taxi from Pinar del Río (CUP 400–600) is recommended.

The town is small and walkable. For exploring the surrounding area, a bicycle or arranged vehicle is useful. Roads in the countryside vary from paved to dirt tracks.
