Caimanera

Guantánamo, Cuba

Why visit Caimanera?

Caimanera is a small coastal town in the Guantánamo province, located on the northern shore of Guantánamo Bay. The town is notable primarily for its proximity to the U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay — the oldest overseas U.S. naval base and the most well-known feature of the region. Caimanera is the closest Cuban settlement to the base, and the area has a long history shaped by the military presence.

The town has a population of a few thousand and retains a frontier-town atmosphere. Before the revolution, Caimanera was a lively port with bars and entertainment catering to U.S. military personnel. Since 1959, the town has existed in the shadow of the base, with restricted access zones and military watchtowers visible from certain points.

The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October. The bay area can be hot and humid. The dry season (November–April) is more comfortable for visiting.
