About Chambas

Chambas is a small town in the northern part of Ciego de Ávila Province, Cuba. It sits on flat agricultural land surrounded by sugarcane fields and cattle ranches, serving as a local administrative centre for the surrounding rural area. The town has a population of roughly 15,000 and retains a quiet, working character with no tourist infrastructure.

The climate is tropical — dry season from November to April, rainy season May through October. The terrain is flat and low-lying, typical of central Cuba's agricultural heartland.

How to reach

By Plane

No airport. The nearest is Jardines del Rey Airport (CCC) on Cayo Coco, approximately 60 km northeast (about 1 hour by road), though this airport primarily serves resort tourists. The more practical option is Abel Santamaría Airport (SNU) in Santa Clara, about 130 km west (2 hours).

By Train

By Car / Road

Chambas is on the Carretera Central, roughly 50 km north of Ciego de Ávila city (45 minutes) and 130 km east of Santa Clara (2 hours). From Havana, approximately 400 km via the A1 autopista (4.5 hours). Occasional bus services and colectivo taxis pass through.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Bici-taxis available for short trips.
