Santa Maria de Dota
San José, Costa Rica
Why visit Santa Maria de Dota?
Santa María de Dota is the head city of Dota Canton in San José Province, Costa Rica. Set in the Talamanca mountain range at an elevation of 1,548 meters (5,079 feet), the town sits in a high-altitude agricultural valley 65 km south of San José. The canton has a population of approximately 7,500 residents.
The town serves as the primary economic hub for the Los Santos coffee district. High elevation, volcanic soil, and distinct rainfall cycles produce high-grade Arabica coffee, primarily Catuai and Caturra varieties. The local cooperative, Coopedota, processes much of the regional harvest and operates the world's first certified carbon-neutral coffee processing facility. Aside from agriculture, visitors come for high-altitude birdwatching, cloud forest trails, and trout fishing.
The mountain environment keeps temperatures temperate year-round, averaging 15°C to 24°C (59°F–75°F) during the day and dropping to 10°C–14°C (50°F–57°F) at night. The area receives around 2,500 mm of rain annually, mostly falling during the wet season from May through November.
