Why visit Tibas?

Tibás (officially the Canton of Tibás) lies in the Greater Metropolitan Area of San José, 3 km (1.9 mi) north of Costa Rica's capital city center. Covering 8.15 sq km (3.15 sq mi), it is one of the country's smallest and most densely populated cantons, housing over 80,000 residents across five districts: San Juan, Cinco Esquinas, Anselmo Llorente, León XIII, and Colima. San Juan de Tibás serves as the canton's administrative center.

Visitors come to Tibás primarily for football. The canton contains Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, the 23,112-seat home venue of Deportivo Saprissa, one of Central America's most successful football clubs. Known locally as La Cueva del Monstruo ("The Monster's Cave"), the stadium hosts regular domestic league matches, international club tournaments, and major outdoor concerts. Outside of match days, Tibás functions as a residential and commercial suburb with working-class neighborhood diners (sodas), local parks, and direct transit access to central San José.

Tibás sits in the Central Valley at an elevation of 1,160 meters (3,806 feet) above sea level, giving it a tropical highland climate. Daytime temperatures consistently hover between 24°C and 28°C (75°F–82°F), while nighttime temperatures drop to 16°C–18°C (61°F–64°F). Annual precipitation averages 2,000 mm, concentrated heavily during the wet season.
