Vazquez de Coronado

San José, Costa Rica

Why visit Vazquez de Coronado?

Vázquez de Coronado (commonly called Coronado) is a canton located 11 km northeast of downtown San José in Costa Rica's Central Valley. Its municipal seat is San Isidro de Coronado, an agricultural town situated at an altitude of 1,385 m on the slopes of the Cordillera Central. Higher districts such as Cascajal, San Jerónimo, and Las Nubes reach elevations over 2,000 m, where dairy pastures border the cloud forests of Braulio Carrillo National Park.

The canton is recognized for its dairy industry, producing fresh milk, cheeses, and strawberries for the San José metropolitan area. Temperatures are cooler than in central San José, ranging from 13°C to 22°C (55°F to 72°F) with frequent afternoon mist known locally as pelo de gato.

Travelers visit Coronado for its landmark neo-Gothic parish church, scenic mountain roads, and proximity to high-altitude hiking trails without traveling far from the capital.
