Casanare is one of the great untamed departments of Colombia's Orinoquía, the "Wild East" where the Andes flatten out into the endless tropical grasslands known as Los Llanos. Bordered by the Andean foothills to the west and stretching east toward the Meta and Casanare rivers, this is cattle country — vast savannas dotted with herds, working ranches (hatos), and the llanero cowboys who pioneered and still define the landscape on horseback.
For travelers, Casanare is far off the beaten path: even most Colombians have never been, and international guidebooks barely mention it. Its appeal is precisely that wildness. The seasonally flooded plains are among the best wildlife-watching destinations in South America — capybaras, caimans, anacondas, giant anteaters, and an extraordinary density of birds — while the working hatos offer an authentic immersion into ranching life that has barely changed in generations.
The departmental capital, Yopal, sits at the western edge against the Andean piedmont and serves as the gateway, supply hub, and transport node for the whole department. From here the savanna rolls eastward toward the Venezuelan frontier.
When to Visit
The Llanos run on two seasons, and choosing between them matters more than the calendar month:
- Dry season (roughly December–March) is the prime travel window. Roads across the savanna are passable, wildlife concentrates around shrinking water sources (making it far easier to spot), and ranch life and llanero festivals are in full swing. This is the recommended time for most visitors.
- Wet season (roughly April–November) floods large stretches of the plains. Travel overland becomes difficult and many tracks turn impassable, though the flooded savanna is lush and dramatic.
Temperatures are consistently hot and humid year-round in the lowlands; bring sun protection, insect repellent, and rain gear regardless of season.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Yopal is the practical base for moving around Casanare. It is connected to Bogotá by a paved highway via the Andean foothills, and there are also road and air links into the department.
- By road: Paved roads reach Yopal and the main towns, but once you head out onto the savanna toward the hatos and remoter destinations, paving ends and a 4x4 (jeep) or motorcycle becomes essential — the same overland reality as the rest of the Orinoquía. In the wet season, many of these unpaved tracks flood.
- By bus: Long-distance buses run between Bogotá and Yopal; onward services reach other departmental towns. Beyond the main routes, expect informal shared transport.
- By air: Yopal has El Alcaraván Airport (EYP) with flights to/from Bogotá, the quickest way in.

WhatsAppCuisine
Casanare's table is pure llanero, built around cattle and open-fire cooking:
- Mamona (also called ternera a la llanera) — the signature dish: young beef butchered into large cuts, skewered on wooden stakes, and slow-roasted vertically around a wood fire. It is the centerpiece of any ranch gathering or llanero celebration.
- Hervido / sancocho — hearty meat-and-root stews common across the plains.
- River fish and plantain, yuca (cassava), and arepas round out most meals.
Expect very meat-centric menus; vegetarians and vegans should plan ahead, as plant-based options are limited outside the larger towns.
Culture & Festivals
Casanare's identity is llanero — the culture of the plains, shared across the Colombian and Venezuelan Orinoquía. Its defining art form is joropo, the fast, foot-stamping dance and music driven by harp, cuatro (four-string guitar), and maracas, often accompanied by coplas (sung verses). Cattle ranching, horsemanship, and trabajo de llano (cowboy work) are woven into daily life and celebration alike.

WhatsAppNotable Experiences
- Stay on a working hato (cattle ranch). Sleep on a ranch in the savanna, watch (or join) the llaneros working cattle on horseback, and experience plains life firsthand — the most authentic way to understand Casanare.
- Llanos wildlife watching. The seasonally flooded grasslands rank among South America's premier safari-style destinations: capybaras, caimans, anacondas, giant anteaters, deer, and prolific birdlife, best in the dry season when animals gather at waterholes.
- Horseback riding across the savanna. Riding is the traditional and most fitting way to cross the open Llanos.
- A joropo night. Catch live harp-and-cuatro music and dancing, ideally tied to a llanero festival or a ranch gathering.
- Birdwatching at dawn and dusk, when the plains' enormous bird diversity is most active.
