Villa Alemana

Villa Alemana is a city of approximately 140,000 in the Valparaíso Region, part of the Greater Valparaíso conurbation, 20 km east of Valparaíso. Founded by German immigrants in the 19th century (the name means "German Town"), it is a residential and commercial suburb in the Marga Marga valley.

By Plane

Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (SCL) in Santiago is 90 km southeast. Buses and Metro trains from Valparaíso run frequently (30 min, CLP 800–1,000).

By Train

Villa Alemana is on the Valparaíso Metro line, with frequent services.

By Car / Road

From Valparaíso, take Route 60 east for 20 km (20 min).

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

• Parque Villa Alemana: the main park with a lake and gardens.

• Plaza de Armas: the central square with a church and bandstand.

• Marga-Marga Valley walks: the valley has short hiking trails.

• Shopping: the main street Avenida Alessandri has shops and markets.

• Restaurante El Alemán (mid-range): German-Chilean food. Mains CLP 6,000–12,000.
• Cocinería La Plaza (budget): empanadas. Mains CLP 3,000–5,000.

Tap water is safe to drink. There are a few simple bars and cafés on the main square.

• Budget: Hostal Villa Alemana (shared CLP 10,000).
• Mid-range: Hotel Marga-Marga (private CLP 35,000–50,000).

• Mercado local: a small market selling fresh produce and basic goods.
• Almacenes de la plaza: grocery stores for daily needs.

• Quilpué (8 km west, 10 min): neighbouring city.
• Valparaíso (20 km west, 20 min): historic port.
• Limache (12 km east, 15 min): agricultural market.
• Viña del Mar (15 km west, 15 min): beach resort.
