San Lorenzo de Tarapacá is a small village of approximately 500 in the Tarapacá Region, 80 km east of Iquique in the Tarapacá Valley. It has a well-preserved 18th-century adobe church and was historically an important stop on the colonial trade route between the coast and the altiplano. The village was declared a Typical Zone for its colonial architecture.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) in Iquique is 80 km west. Buses run irregularly — a 4x4 or tour is recommended.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

What are the things to do?

  • Iglesia de Tarapacá: an 18th-century adobe church with a white bell tower and a beautifully carved wooden altar. A National Monument.

  • Plaza de Armas: the village square with traditional adobe houses.
