Camina

Camiña is a small altiplano village of approximately 1,500 in the Tarapacá Region, 140 km east of Iquique. It lies in a fertile valley of the same name at 2,500 m elevation and is an important archaeological site with Inca-era terraces and pre-Columbian petroglyphs.

By Plane

Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) in Iquique is 140 km west. Buses from Iquique run 2–3 times weekly (3 hr, CLP 5,000).

By Car / Road

From Iquique, take Route 16 east then north to Camiña (140 km, 2.5 hr). Partially paved.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

• Inca terraces: agricultural terraces built by the Inca, still in use.

• Petroglyphs: pre-Columbian rock art in the valley.

• Iglesia de Camiña: an adobe church in the village square.

• Hiking in the Camiña Valley: terraced hillsides and desert scenery.

• Archaeological tours: guided walks to the petroglyph sites.

• Cocinería Camiña (budget): simple local food. Mains CLP 3,000–5,000.

Tap water is safe to drink. There are a few simple bars and cafés on the main square.

• Budget: Hospedaje Camiña (basic shared CLP 10,000).

• Mercado local: a small market selling fresh produce and basic goods.
• Almacenes de la plaza: grocery stores for daily needs.

• Iquique (140 km west, 2.5 hr): regional capital.
• Pica (90 km south, 2 hr): oasis town.
• Colchane (60 km northeast, 1.5 hr): border town with Bolivia.
• Mamina (40 km north, 1 hr): altiplano village.
