Colchane

Colchane is a small town of approximately 1,500 in the Tarapacá Region, 200 km east of Iquique at 3,700 m elevation on the Bolivian border. It is a major border crossing point and the last Chilean settlement before the Paso Colchane into Bolivia. The town has an Aymara character and sits in the high-altitude altiplano landscape of the Volcán Isluga National Park.

By Plane

Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) in Iquique is 200 km west. Buses from Iquique run daily (4 hr, CLP 7,000).

By Car / Road

From Iquique, take Route 15 east through Huara and Camiña to Colchane (200 km, 3.5 hr). Partially paved.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

• Paso Colchane: the border crossing with Bolivia.

• Volcán Isluga National Park: the park surrounds Colchane, with the Isluga volcano (5,550 m), flamingo lagoons, and Aymara villages.

• Plaza de Armas: the border town square with a church.

• Border crossing: the route into Bolivia toward Oruro and La Paz.

• Wildlife watching: flamingos, vizcachas, and vicuñas in the altiplano.

• Hot springs: thermal pools near the park.

• Cocinería Colchane (budget): simple altiplano food. Mains CLP 3,000–5,000.

Tap water is safe to drink. There are a few simple bars and cafés on the main square.

• Budget: Hospedaje Colchane (basic shared CLP 10,000).

• Mercado local: a small market selling fresh produce and basic goods.
• Almacenes de la plaza: grocery stores for daily needs.

• Iquique (200 km west, 3.5 hr): regional capital.
• Volcán Isluga National Park (surrounding the town): altiplano landscapes.
• Oruro, Bolivia (across the border): Bolivian altiplano city.
• Mamina (40 km southwest, 1 hr): altiplano village.
