Matilla

Matilla is a small oasis village of approximately 1,000 in the Tarapacá Region, 95 km southeast of Iquique, adjacent to Pica. It is another lush agricultural oasis in the Atacama Desert, known for its mangoes, citrus, and the Matilla thermal springs.

By Plane

Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) in Iquique is 95 km west. Buses from Pica run regularly (10 min, CLP 500).

By Car / Road

From Iquique, take Route 16 east and then south via Pica to Matilla (95 km, 1.5 hr).

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

• Cocha de Matilla: a thermal spring with a small swimming pool.

• Plaza de Armas: a shady village square.

• Mango orchards: the oasis produces exceptionally sweet mangoes.

• Swimming at Cocha Matilla: a thermal pool (CLP 2,000 entry).

• Mango tasting: buy fresh mangoes, preserves, and mango wine.

• Cocinería Matilla (budget): simple food. Mains CLP 3,000–5,000.

Tap water is safe to drink. There are a few simple bars and cafés on the main square.

• Budget: Hospedaje Matilla (basic shared CLP 10,000).

• Mercado local: a small market selling fresh produce and basic goods.
• Almacenes de la plaza: grocery stores for daily needs.

• Pica (5 km north, 5 min): larger oasis with Cocha Resbaladero.
• Iquique (95 km west, 1.5 hr): regional capital.
• La Tirana (60 km northwest, 1 hr): pilgrimage town.
